Production of electricity
The company is primarily engaged in the production and trade of electricity. It provides a wide range of electric services. Established in 1985 under the provision of Law 49/1984 of 26 December, it was the first company in the world exclusively dedicated to the transmission of electricity and the operation of electricity systems. Formerly known as Red Eléctrica de España S.A., the company has a registered office located in Madrid, Spain. As the operator of the Spanish power system, the company's principal mission is to guarantee the continuity and security of the power supply and to properly coordinate the production and transmission system, performing its functions in coordination with the operators and clients of the Iberian power market based on the principles of transparency, objectiveness and independence. It also acts as the operator of the insular and extrapeninsular power systems. As the manager of the transmission grid, the company acts as the sole transmissioner and as such must guarantee that facilities are adequately developed and enlarged as needed, that they are maintained and enhanced on the basis of uniform and consistent criteria, that the transmission of power between external systems using the Spanish power system is properly managed, that the managers of other interconnected grids receive the information they need to guarantee safe operations and that third party access to the grid is guaranteed under equal conditions. The company also conducts its business abroad in order to maximum the company's experience. Its business abroad is handled by the subsidiary Red Eléctrica Internacional and focuses on the provision of consulting and advisory services and on the investment in power assets abroad, primarily in Bolivia and Peru. The company is the sole transmission agent and operator of the Spanish electricity system.
